So according to an article by Maryan Sham, Global News, July 18, 2019. You need to make approx $22 an hour to pay rent for a two bedroom apartment in major cities across Canada. How do you survive if u are only making minimum wage?

“If you earn minimum wage and live in Vancouver, you would need to work 112 hours a week to afford a decent two-bedroom apartment, a new study says.

“According to a new Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives report, minimum wage earners in most major cities would need to work much longer hours in order to rent an average two-bedroom unit.

““The rental wage across the country is $22 an hour for a two-bedroom or $20 an hour for a one-bedroom,” report author and economist David Macdonald said Wednesday.”

“But it’s much more in big cities like Vancouver and Toronto.”

The report calculates rental wages by breaking down the hourly wage that full-time minimum wage workers would need to earn in order to afford rent for an average one- or two-bedroom apartment.

This is scary. For those starting out and wanting a family, where do you start? You probably want to save for a house, have a family, vehicles, even time off work costs money, a weekend away, never mind a weeks holidays. So, how do you ever save for these things, if your income is all going to rental? Never mind, if you get sick or something unforeseen happens. How many individuals’ out there even start their careers at $22/hour. You still need to live life. We are here only for a short time, do we really want to spend all our live working so we can put a roof over our head. That wasn’t my intention. But that is what has happened. Life can throw you curve balls and we need to plan ahead and take a path that we can manage and lead us to a better life and lifestyle.

Struggles

As for myself, a little history. I was married at 23 and we managed at that time to save for a down payment on our first home. We were not even in that home a year, and my husband passed away at the age of 25. I sure wasn’t making much money and I had quit my job to be with him (he had cancer). I was able to keep the house, I worked with the bank and they worked with me. But I am not going to say it was easy. Moving forward, I remarried had 3 beautiful children and after 10 years we separated. Anyone who has gone thru a separation knows the financial strain this has on individuals’. I was starting over, this time with three children and I was primarily a stay at home mom. So start all over in the job market. How are I ever going to be able to retire, never mind provide for your children and be home for them. It was a struggle.

Today my kids are on their own, 2 still in university at time of this post, so I am still trying my best to help out, but I want to get off this merry-go-round. I work full-time, contemplate daily of getting a second job so I can pay down debt and one day retire. Retirement looks like a dream.

This is not the life I had envisioned for myself. Is it for you? Where are you in your life? Starting out? Putting children thru post-secondary education, nearing that retirement age, but unsure if you can afford to retire. It doesn’t matter, we are dictated by our income and our goals.

It doesn’t matter what stage of your life you are in, a lot of us want more. Have a debt free life, travel more, support our children more, just live life according to your ideas, not dictated by our employer. I have found an alternative, I am not talking a get rich scheme. I am talking about a get your hands dirty and work hard and set goals and achieve these goals through support and training. Sound too good to be true. I thought so too!

Earn Money From Home Business

So how about looking into affiliate marketing. I am not talking “get-rich-quick” scheme. I am talking a real legitimate online business you can do from anywhere. I stumbled across this amazing opportunity when I was searching for alternative methods of creating more disposable income.

The community I am a part of is so supportive, we can ask any question and someone has an answer. We can post about our struggles, there are challenges but our community motivates us to overcome them. And best of all, we can post about our successes. What better incentive than to hear about someone else struggles, and how they overcame them. There is something to be said about reading about an individuals’ success and accomplishments, that makes this such a super opportunity.

  1. I can totally relate to this article. I thought the same thing when I decided to try an online business instead of going with minimum wage jobs. So far I think Wealthy Affiliate has given me the best platform. I have student loans to pay and I would never make enough with a minimum wage job. I need something bigger!

I was actually making money out of college but I already knew that kind of work wasn’t for me. I want to do my income generating activities at my own pace and in my own time.

    1. Exactly Charles. You are young and you can have it all at WA. Just stay focussed and you will be working on your own terms. All the best!

  2. Great article.  The minimum wage just isn’t working for most people in Canada or in the US.  It barely covers food and a roof over your head!

Earning extra income from home is really a dream come true for me.  Making money at my computer is something I never thought was possible.  I love it.  I have my own hours, no boss and it also help the creative part of me find an outlet.

Another thing I like about working from home (or anywhere their is an internet connection) is when you have an idea for something you want to write about, you don’t have to wait for the office to open in the morning and ask your boss if it is okay to publish something.  You are your own boss.  It’s really the ultimate opportunity.  I know Wealthy Affiliate and they are the top of the pyramid…second to none.

Thanks for such a great article and the recommendation to check out WA.

    1. I agree Tim. I never thought I would ever have the opportunity to work at home. WA has certainly put me in the right direction. I have no doubts that I will one day be working in the luxury of my home and when I want to work. Day or night!
      Thank you for your comments!

  3. I agree it’s pretty scary to consider the cost of living relative to minimum wage. I guess it’s really important to have a good job especially if you’re living in a city like Vancouver. I’m sorry for your loss. I can’t even imagine it must have been a tough time. You put yourself on the right track with Wealthy Affiliate. It truly is one of the best platforms and communities out there and is highly recommended, well done and best wishes to you.
